Teen’s Thumb Heals Without Surgery, Thanks to “Miracle Workers”
13-year-old Ross Shows was enjoying the last day skiing with his family at Granby Ranch, CO when he broke his thumb. A trip to the local emergency room had doctors concerned there was damage to the growth plate, potentially affecting future use of his thumb. Surgery was discussed, and the decision was made to forgo surgery in Colorado, and see one of Specialty Orthopedic Group’s (SOG) specialists once the family returned home to Oxford, MS.
A few days later, Ross had an appointment with orthopedic nurse practitioner Mamie Kosko in SOG’s Oxford clinic. Mamie relieved concerns, assured Ross and his parents, Ashley and Scott, that the damage done to his thumb was not major and gave Ross the option of a cast or brace. Ross returned for a follow-up appointment with Mamie two weeks later. X-rays showed his thumb was healing well, and no surgery was required.
“The fellowship trained specialists at SOG are so good; it was completely healed and back to normal in under three weeks,” said Scott Shows. “SOG are truly miracle workers.”
